Page started on 13th Feb 2001 SCOTT WALKER. FLAWED GENIUS - OR FAILED POP STAR? As a lifelong fan I believe he's a flawed genius. Certainly not a failed pop star, as part of the Walker Bros. He was hugely successful in the sixties. So what happened? Personally I feel Scott gets bored very easily without new challenges - he's simply not happy to be just a good singer. So there's the flaw, if you can call it that. Anyone whose followed his career will know he's had more changes in direction than a Grand Prix driver. After the Brothers split he produced the wonderful Brel inspired Scott 1-4 albums, followed by "Til The Band Comes In " in collaboration with Ady Semel. He called it his "tenement suite" at the time, with a different characters story emerging from each apartment. Removing his writers hat he then produced albums of cover versions. Movie themes, cabaret type material and even a few country - tinged albums. All were produced well and beautifully sang but somehow that wasn't enough for Scott and quickly became bored with the whole recording process. Which is why, I feel, he drifted into the Walker Brothers reunion, purely for the crack, and produced another three albums - the last being in 1978. He then dropped out of sight for six years until" Climate of Hunter", once again wearing his writers hat. This was followed by ten years of silence with fans left wondering what was happening - even a national newspaper put out a search for him. When "Tilt" emerged in 1995 it seemed to me he'd lost interest in composing conventional songs, in fact he was quoted as saying that he believed that language was dead in songs, there being nothing left to say. Two albums in over 20 years - yet he still has a mass of obsessive fans like me and, apparently influenced scores of young musicians - but hardly a conventional career. Due to the lack of new material I've tended to collect absolutely anything I could lay my hands on, bootlegs, badly recored TV audio tracks, fuzzy video clips, also rare and few and far between due to the non appearance of VCR's until the eighties - and of course the criminal dumping of his BBC series.
